Import rules and regulations on Japanese used vehicles in Iran


Japanese market gives the best combination in price, economy, quality standard and flexibility while offering used vehicles. Even today, very old Japanese used models are running on the roads of many countries. Situated in the southwestern Asia, Iran import many used vehicles from Japan. Iranians go with Japanese used vehicles because even though they are used but they stand high on quality, safety, reliability and are within everyone’s reach. The Japanese automobile industry holds a significant portion of the world automobile market as vehicles offered by them are durable, comfortable, safe, high on technology and quality and above all are fuel-efficient.


Japan has acquired the top spot as the most consistent and reasonable vehicle manufacturing market. Along with the new automobile sector, used car market of Japan is also rising at a greater pace. Used vehicles from Japan are imported by almost all countries across the world. People prefer to buy them as they get a quality vehicle at reasonable rates.

With many advantages in technologies, importing a used vehicle is not difficult. There are many online portals that assist buyers in buying a used vehicle. While importing a used vehicle importer should be aware of country’s import rules and regulations to avoid any problem. Like other countries, there are certain regulations in Iran that are to be followed by the importer. Vehicles over three years old are prohibited. Importation of diesel engines is prohibited in the country. Importation of left-hand drive vehicles is allowed in Iran. Vehicles with right steering wheel are prohibited in the country.

Temporary Importation:-
Import of used automobile to Islamic Republic of Iran is allowed when a certificate has been obtained from cabinet. Iranian nationals residing abroad are not allowed to import their automobile when returning. However, temporary import of vehicle by foreigners and Iranian residents abroad is allowed by receiving the carnet de passage or tripque booklets from the motoring centers in the original country. Automobiles imported must be re-exported from Iran when the permitted period i.e. 3 months is over. Iranian resident who are out of the country can import a used vehicle provided they have resided abroad for a minimum period of 6 months.

Those who could not get the carnet de passage or triptique booklets in the country of origin should get the temporary admission license in the entrance frontier by giving deposit or a bank bond on security.

Required Documents:-
  • Permit from the Ministry of Commerce
  • Bill of Lading (BOL)
  • Original certificate of Title and Registration
  • Original Commercial/Purchase Invoice
  • Proof of Insurance

Duties and Taxes:-
Vehicles imported in Iran are subjected to duties and taxes. Importation of vehicles by diplomats can be duty-free with exemption from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran.

Shipping Ports:-
The common shipping ports in Iran for importation of used vehicles are port of Bandar Abbas, port of Bushehr. RoRo (Roll-on Roll-off) shipping method is used generally for vehicle shipment. Another shipment method, container method is used if requested by the customer.
