Why Corolla is Toyota’s perennial car?




The Japanese automobile industry is one of the most prominent and largest industries in the world. The country is a home of various makers, and people make their choices based on their own preferences and needs. One such prominent Japanese automobile manufacturer that is best recognized for building reliable cars is Toyota Motors. And the car that created that stature is Corolla. This popular Japan manufactured car has been with its customers since 1966 and with over 40 million Corollas sold worldwide till now, it's the most popular car line in history. Even after 48 years, it makes many cars in the competition to take a back seat, and inspiring other manufacturers. Toyota Corolla has been practically predominant and never terribly exciting.


The Corolla was originally designed to meet the changing needs of Japanese passengers in the mid-1960s. The people's desire to get around in a personal vehicle let to the birth of Corolla and since then there is no looking back. Toyota Corolla is every man's car. Everyone seems to drive Corolla at some point of time in their life. Toyota's commitment of providing the best quality vehicle is ensured by Corolla. Presently Corolla is produced at 15 plants worldwide. Let's look at the history of everyone’s car. Till now, there has been 11 generations of Corolla and with each successive generation Corolla is getting bigger yet powerful. Each generation, it comes out with more stylish and fantastic body with powerful engine.

History-

First generation lasted from 1966- 1970; Corolla was engineered extremely simple and was available in two-door coupe, four-door sedan and two-door wagon body styles during that period. A 60-horsepower is sent by a, 1.1-liter overhead valve four-cylinder mounted longitudinally in the engine bay, to a four-speed manual transmission and then to a solid rear axle. An automatic transmission wasn't on the options list at that time.

The First generation Corolla was a simple basic car. Even though there was nothing attractive in that model, but it did not lack an ounce in quality. Second generation came in 1970 with a more rounded body and the 1400 cc T and 1600cc 2T OHV engines were added to the range. The 1970s Corolla was more comfortable than ‘ 69 and was also offered with an automatic transmission to broaden its appeal.

With third generation Toyota Corolla became somewhat bigger and heavier. A total of five Corolla models were available during this period. A two-door sedan powered by a 1.2-liter engine was joined by a four-door sedan, a two-door hardtop, a sport-oriented SR5 hardtop and a five-door station wagon — all powered by the 1.6-liter engine.

The Fourth generation Corolla was released in 1979, when many countries were dealing with oil crises, this passenger car evolved as a savior. With superior overall performance and excellent fuel-efficiency, the car satisfied the need of its users at that era. This generation models were last to use K "hicam" and T series engines. As an extra cost option, fuel injection was introduced.

Within two months after the launched of Fifth generation Corolla in 1983, the sales of Corolla reached the mark of 10 million vehicles. The fifth generation Corolla entered the market with five body types, including the 4-door and 5-door (the former lift back) models in the sedan series, and the 2-door and 3-door models in the coupe series and the wagon. Later in October '84, two more models, 3-door and 5-door hatchbacks were added to the lineup with the focus on overseas market. The FF drive-train in the sedan and hatchback models and the FR drive-train in the other models were adopted in the fifth generation Corolla.

The Sixth generation Corolla, launched in the year 1987 was somewhat curvier, but had well proportioned style. The sixth generation Corolla was available in four body types, including a 4-door sedan, a 2-door coupe, a 3-door hatchback and a 5-door hatchback. The coupes were discontinued after the 1991 model year. Along with the few new paint colors, the 1992 model was featured with the high-line LE sedan with the four-speed automatic.

The Seventh generation Corolla focused on abundance of curves. With the body panels deeply drawn toward the body ends, make this a high class family sedan style with the image of luxury and driving performance. Gasoline engines were available in the 1.3-liter 4E-FE, the 1.5-liter 5A-FE, the 1.6-liter 4A-FE, the Sports twin cam 4A-GE and the supercharged 4A-GZE, and for the diesel engine, the 2.0-liter 2C was adopted. Initially, two types of body variations, including the sedan and 2-door coupe (Corolla Levin) were released and later the wagon, van, the 3-door hatchback (Corolla FX) and the 4-door hard top (Corolla Celles) were added simultaneously for a total of six body variations. By the end, the Corolla became the best-selling car.

With Eight generation Corolla lose some weight and the initiation of new engine increases the fuel-efficiency of the automobile. This generation Corolla engine were first to have an aluminum engine block and aluminum cylinder heads, making Corolla lighter than the previous ones. The eighth generation Corolla had roomy cabins for easy entry and exit and with body panels utilizing simple, solid surfaces.

In 2000, the Ninth generation Corolla was introduced with interior comfort, first-class tone and refinement along with the simplicity of usage and dependability. This generation Corolla was introduced to attract primarily the youth, with simple and lasting interior design. The gasoline engines were designed with the use of advanced technology, VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing-intelligent system), in order to achieve higher output and better fuel economy.
