Import rules and regulations on Japanese used vehicles in Canada


With everyday popularity of Japanese vehicles is expanding. The country has always been a popular source for transportation of used and new vehicle. Within a year only, large numbers of used vehicles from Japan are exported to many countries across the world. Japanese vehicles impressive specifications, good condition and high quality constitutes for the popularity of Japanese vehicles. Situated in the northern North America, encompassing a wide diverse territory, Canada is a major importer of Japanese vehicles. Not only new vehicles, used vehicles from Japan are also imported in Canada. Large numbers of Japanese used cars are imported in Canada.


Importation of used vehicle in Canada is not a difficult process. There are many used car portals that help importers to purchase a vehicle of their choice. These portals provide thousands of used car stocks of most reliable and experienced exporters in Japan. Importation of used vehicle in Canada requires little documentation. For smooth customs clearance, it is important for the used vehicle importer to abide by the rules. Here are few guidelines need to follow in order to import a Japanese used vehicle.

Age Restriction:-
Only the vehicles fifteen years old or older to the year of manufacture are eligible to be imported into Canada.

One exception on the age restriction is given if the vehicle imported is a "competition vehicle". Importer must have a letter from manufacturer stating that the vehicle is exclusively for competition use only, and type(s) of competition(s) it's listed for. Importer should also have a pre-shipment approval, giving proof by the Letter and pictures of the vehicle. If approved, it can be imported strictly for competition purposes.

Inspection:-
Soil inspection will be performed by Canada Border Services Agency at the time of arrival. Additional charges will result if the vehicle imported is found dirty and is required to be moved to a specialized cleaning facility.

Importation of right-hand drive vehicles is preferred in Canada.

Required Documents for Customs Clearance:-
  • Deregistration Certificate
  • Bill of Lading
  • Export Certificate
  • English Translation of Export Certificate
  • Bill of Sale

After the vehicle has landed, if the buyer is doing the customs clearance himself, then buyer also requires:
  • Request for Release Approval form
  • Cargo Control Abstract
  • Soil/agricultural inspection release provided by the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).

Provisional Residence:-
After clearing the used vehicle, Canadian Customs will give a ‘Transport Canada Vehicle Import’ Form (Form 1). Buyer should fill the form and take it to registry agent along with the proof of ownership documents.

Vehicle is allowed in Canada if:-
  • The vehicle meets all MVSA requirements, and was acquired NEW abroad via a manufacturer’s foreign buyer program for Canadians abroad (proof of compliance is required).
  • The vehicle meets all United States requirements and acquired NEW abroad via a manufacturer’s foreign buyer program for North-American buyers abroad (additional restrictions apply).
  • The vehicle is a returning Canadian compliant vehicle originally owned in Canada (proof of compliance is required).
  • The vehicle is a returning United States compliant vehicle originally owned in the U.S. (additional restrictions apply).

Duties and Taxes:-
  • Off-loading costs- about 400CAN$
  • Customs Duty- CIF x 6.1%
  • Excise Tax for Cars with Air Conditioning - CAN$100
  • Additional excise taxes for cars over 2,007 kg or 4,425 lbs.
  • GST- (CIF + Duty + Excise Taxes) x 5%

Shipping Ports:-
In Canada, generally used vehicles are shipped to Westminster and Vancouver. The most common shipping method RoRo (Roll-on, Roll-off) method is used for vehicle shipment. However, on request of customers more expensive container shipping method is arranged.
