Import rules and regulations on Japanese used vehicles in Dominican Republic

Japanese automakers are known across the world for understanding the taste of automobile buyers very well. And as a result, the country is a popular name when it comes to automobiles. Along with new vehicles, even used vehicles from Japan are popular in many countries across the world. An advantage of buying a Japanese used car is quality assurance. Japanese vehicles are well-liked among masses because of their quality, reliability and fuel-efficiency. Like other countries, Japanese vehicles are popular in Dominican Republic also.

Shipping a vehicle to Dominican Republic is an easy process if the importer follows all the specified rules and regulations. It is important for the importer to be present in the Dominican Republic for customs clearance of any vehicle. In order to make sure that the vehicle imported in the Dominican Republic meets with the country's safety standards and requirements, inspection is done on the vehicle. The age of used vehicle imported into the country should not be more than seven years since manufactured. Importation of left hand drive vehicles is permitted in the country. • Original Commercial/Purchase Invoice
• Original Bill of Lading
• Driver’s license, & license plate
• Residence Visa
• Original Dominican Consular invoice, stamped at nearest Dominican Consulate.

Duties and Taxes:-
Used vehicles imported in the country are subjected to duties and taxes. As a new resident one can bring in a car at little or no duty if he/she has owned it for two years. Diplomats are allowed to import vehicle duty free. Returning residents living abroad for more than 2 years with less than 180 days in the Dominican Republic stay during that time may apply for a partial exemption. Non-motorized bicycles may be imported duty free if are part of the household effects shipment.

Import Restrictions:-

• Only one vehicle is allowed for importation per person.
• All vehicles being imported must be in the owner's possession for a minimum of one year before importation.
• Engine size on all imported vehicles is limited to six cylinders.
• Importation of all luxury vehicles is prohibited.

Shipping Ports:-
Port for shipment of used vehicle in Dominican Republic is Rio Haina. Generally RoRo (Roll-on Roll-off) shipment is used for shipment of vehicle. However, on request of customers more expensive method called container method is used for vehicle shipment.
