Import rules and regulations on Japanese used vehicles in Guatemala


Japan automobile industry is one of the largest industries in the world. Every year, Japan witness manufacturing of many vehicles integrated with latest technology. Even though there are many vehicles available in the market, but for many buying a new car is still not affordable. Thus, they go with a used one as it is the most convenient path to own a car. When buying a used vehicle, Japan is the place to consider. Along with new cars, many countries across the world import used vehicles from Japan. Situated in Central America, Guatemala is one of the major importers of Japanese used vehicles. Large numbers of residents import used vehicle from Japan as these vehicles are known for being reliable, safe to drive and high on quality.



The major shipping port in Guatemala is Puerto Quetzal. Generally Roll-on Roll-off(RoRo) shipment method is used for vehicle shipment, however on special request of customers more expensive method called container method is used. There are certain regulations that used vehicle importers should follow in order to avoid any problem during customs clearance. Importation of left-hand drive vehicles is allowed in the country.

Documents required-:
  • Original certificate of Title and Registration– notarized by Guatemalan Consulate at origin.
  • Original Bill of Sale/Purchase Invoice - notarized by Guatemalan Consulate at origin.
  • Original Bill of Lading or Carte de Porte– notarized by Guatemalan Consulate at origin.
  • Copy of registration card
  • NIT number & Passport
  • Vehicle Condition Report from a certified mechanic.

Taxes and Duties:-
Taxes/duties range from 1% to 15% of CIF value plus 12% of VAT (Value Added Tax) is imposed on used vehicles imported in the country. Exemption from duties is given to diplomats and member of international missions provided their extension obtaining a diplomatic franchise for shipment release.

Japanese brands are often the choice of people ride. Japanese cars have a powerful engine, and are durable, safe and promising investment. Plus maintaining a Japanese car is not very expensive. The vehicle’s condition and the easiness to import them, make buyers interested to buy Japanese used vehicles.
