Import rules and regulations on Japanese used vehicles in Benin


Africa is the biggest importer of Japanese used vehicles and being its country, Benin also import large numbers of used vehicles from Japan. The presence of many online portals has made the process of importation an easy one. Exporters place their stock on these portals that help buyers to choose a vehicle of their desire from anywhere. Japanese automobile industry is a renowned auto industry. The country’s automobile sector started from the very beginning to reach the present place.


Vehicles manufactured by Japanese automakers are known for being safe and high on quality. Popularity of Japanese vehicles is not confined only to Japan. Almost all countries across the world import vehicles from Japan. There is no fixed trend, all vehicles such as cars, vans, trucks, buses are sold from Japan. With the popularity of new automobile sector, popularity of used automobile sector is also rising.

To make sure that the vehicle imported match up with the country’s rules, there are certain import regulations that are to be followed by the importer. There is no age restriction on used vehicles imported to Benin allowing Beninese to import used vehicle of any age. Importation of left-hand drive vehicles is allowed in the country. Before importing a used vehicle in Benin, Pre Shipment Inspection on used vehicles is required.

Documents required:-
  • Commercial or Purchase Invoice
  • Original Bill of Lading (BoL)
  • Non-Sale Certificate- declaration from the client to not sell the vehicle.
  • Original Certificate of Title and Registration

Duties and Taxes:-
Used vehicles imported in the country are subjected to duties and taxes. Taxes imposed on vehicles depend on factors such as age, power, etc.
  • No exemption- 50% CIF
  • Diplomats- 0.15% CIF
  • Temporary Admission-5.85% CIF

Shipping Port:-
The most recommended port for vehicle shipment is port of Cotonou. The most common shipping method, RoRo (Roll-on Roll-off) shipment is generally used for vehicle shipment. However, on request of customers, more expensive yet safe method of shipping, container method is used.
