Import rules and regulations for Japanese used vehicles in Bermuda


From the United States to Fiji, from Chile to Russia, almost every part of the world import second-hand vehicles. As prices of fuel and vehicles are touching sky, so for low or middle income people, these low-priced vehicles are the only option to possess a vehicle. By far, the largest flow of used vehicles in the world is from Japan. The country is the pioneer of the automobile industry and is known for its creativity and perfection. Almost all parts of the world import used vehicles from Japan.


Located off the east coast of North America, Bermuda is among major importing nations of Japanese used vehicles. Within a year, thousands of used vehicles from Japan make their way to the country. Even though importing Japanese used vehicle is not a difficult task, but importer should follow the import regulations of their country to make the process of importation easy and trouble free.

Right-hand drive vehicle:-

Importation of right hand drive vehicles is allowed in the country.

Inspection:-

All vehicles imported into the country are subjected to inspection by Customs/or the relevant statutory authority.

Restrictions:-

The used vehicle importer must have owned the vehicle for not more than six months before the date of shipping to the country. Automobiles are restricted as to the size and engine capacity. All private (non-commercial) importations of motor vehicles must be supported by a letter of authorization from the Transport Control Department.

All two-stroke motorcycles are prohibited from being imported into Bermuda. Four-stroke motorcycles which have an engine capacity greater than 150cc (15hp/11.25kw) are prohibited from being imported except on authority, and in conformity with, the terms and conditions, of a permit from the Minister of Transport.

Documents required:-

  • Certificate of Title and Registration
  • Insurance Policy and logbook showing length of ownership
  • Commercial Invoice (if new vehicle)
  • Import Permit- From the Transport Control Department

Duties and Taxes:-

Used vehicles imported in the country are subject to duties and taxes. However, Diplomats are allowed to import the vehicle duty free.

Shipping port:-

Major shipping port in Bermuda is Port of Hamilton. The most common shipping method, RoRo (Roll-on Roll-off) is used for vehicle shipment. However, on request of customers, more expensive yet safe method of shipment, container method is used for vehicle shipment.
