Import rules and regulations for Japanese used vehicles in Oman


Japan is one of the important sources of automobile industry and its various brands are exported to almost all parts of the globe. In the used vehicle sector also Japan is quite a popular name. With buying a Japanese used vehicle, buyer buys reliability and quality. The presence of many online portals helped importers for the easy importation of used vehicles. It is kind of a trend among people to purchase used vehicle online. The popularity of Japanese vehicles has spread to almost all countries across the world. People are buying them as they get a quality vehicle at reasonable rates.


Situated in the Southwest Asia, Oman is among a major importer of Japanese used vehicles. Every country has its own import regulations and while importing a vehicle, importer should make sure that they are abiding them. In Oman importation of only left-hand drive vehicles is allowed. As per the regulations for vehicle importation, used vehicles over ten years of age are prohibited to enter in the country. Before importing a used vehicle in Oman, prior permission from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry is required and a "No Objection Certificate" (NOC) from the local agent of that particular brand of car is required.

Documents Required:-
While importing used vehicles in the country, used vehicle importers should present necessary vehicle document to the customs in order to get the vehicle imported. Below are the required documents for vehicle importation-
  • Proof of ownership
  • Copy of Passport
  • Import License
  • Certificate of Registration copy from the origin country
  • Authorization letter from consignee to clear the car on his/her behalf.
  • Valid insurance policy, invoice, local dealer's No Objection Certificate, and Oman Chamber of Commerce & Industry Permit
  • NOC from sponsor for importation
After Customs clearance, a green form will be issued to the importer, which the importer needs to submit with the Royal Oman Police for the registration of the vehicle.

Duties and Taxes:-
Used vehicles imported in the country are subjected to duties and taxes. Duty between 5% -10%levied on all cars, except for cars/bikes registered less than two years ago, and moved from within GCC region. However such vehicles should be accompanied by statistical report from country of Origin.

Shipping Ports:-
The common shipping ports in Oman are port Qaboos, Port Khasab, Sohar port, port of Muscat. Generally, used vehicles are shipped to Oman through RoRo (Roll-on Roll-off) shipment method. However, on request of customers, more safe method of shipment, container method is used.
