Import rules and regulations for Japanese used vehicles in Bolivia

Bolivia is one of the not so developed countries in South America. For faster growth of the nation, infrastructure development and good transportation is required. The majority of cars that clog the roads of Bolivia are used ones and are imported from other countries, mainly Japan. Because of their durability, reliability, and affordability, Japanese brands are especially popular.

If one wishes to import a used vehicle in Bolivia, it cannot be more than five years old. According to a law in 2009, the importation of any vehicles older than five years is prohibited for environmental reasons. Restriction on vehicles is done on the basis of size and engine capacity. Before the importation of the used vehicle, the importer must obtain a valued inspection at origin by a Bolivian contractor. No inspection is required on diplomatic cars. Importation of only left hand drive vehicles is allowed in Bolivia.

Documents required while importing a used vehicle in Bolivia-

• Original certificate of Title and Registration
• Import Permit- from the Ministry of External Affairs, must be approved before importation
• Original Commercial/ Purchase Invoice
• Original Certificate of Origin for shipments other than diplomatic
• Insurance Policy – Original and two copies
• License from Transport Control Department
• Certificate of Condition – Attesting vehicle is in good condition
• Description of Automobile Including the make, model, year, etc.
• Verification certificate (for non-diplomats)

Duties and Taxes:-

Diplomats are entitled for duty-free importation of used vehicles. However, Non-diplomats have to pay all duties and taxes. Details regarding the vehicle should be forwarded to the destination prior to the arrival of the vehicle. Before vehicle shipment, authorization must be obtained from SGS or Inspectorate for vehicles of F.O.B. value over $12,000.

Shipping Ports:-

Bolivia is a landlocked country, hence uses Chile’s port of Africa and Iquique. Generally, RoRo (Roll-on Roll-off) shipment method is used for used vehicle shipment. On request of customers, more expensive yet convenient and safest shipment method, container shipment is used.
