Import rules and regulations for Japanese used vehicles in Switzerland


Japanese vehicles are known across the world as they are reliable, fuel- efficient and cost effective. Around millions of Japanese vehicles are exported from Japan every year. All countries import Japanese vehicles either new or used. With the popularity of new vehicles, reputation of used vehicles is also gearing up. Located in Western and Central Europe, Switzerland import many used vehicles from Japan. People prefer to buy used vehicles as they get quality vehicles and at practical prices.


While importing a used vehicle in the country, used vehicle importer should make sure that the vehicle matches with the country’s safety and regulation standards. Switzerland allows the importation of left-hand drive vehicles. While importing used vehicles, importers have to pay necessary duties and taxes. Importation of vehicles belonging to people moving to Switzerland is allowed duty free provided the vehicle had been used for at least six months abroad. The owner will not be allowed to sell the vehicle within 12 months of import.

Temporary importation of private vehicles:-
  • Persons residing abroad (tourists and business travelers) may use their vehicle in Switzerland duty free as long as they are resident abroad. Such vehicles are allowed in the country without any formalities.
  • By filling out the appropriate customs authorization (Form 15.30), foreign employees, students and interns may use their duty free imported vehicle for two years in the country.

Inspection:-
Used foreign vehicles imported in Switzerland must undergo technical test at the cantonal road traffic office before it can be used on roads.
Documents to be presented to customs for the assessment:-
  • Invoice or contract of sale
  • Vehicle registration document/certificate (even if already cancelled)
  • Proof of identity (passport, identity card, etc.)
  • Import customs declaration
  • Possibly proof of origin from seller

Taxation on vehicles:-
In case the importers don’t have to pay required customs duty, then they will be charged according to the cubic capacity and weight of the vehicle. This will be between CHF 12-15 per 100kg for a car and a flat rate of CHF 37 per 100kg for a motorbike. Cars and larger four-wheel motor vehicles are also subjected to motor tax at a rate of 4% of the vehicle's value, although motorbikes are exempted from this tax. And VAT will be charged to the sum at a rate of 8%.

Shipping Port:-
Used vehicles from Japan are shipped to Switzerland through port of Geneva and Zurich. The most common method of shipment of used vehicle is RoRo (Roll-on Roll-off) shipment method. On request of customers, more expensive yet safe method of shipment, container method is used.
