Japanese Shipping Industry


A massive increase in Japan’s economy is clear enough to prove that Japan maritime industry is thriving. Over past decade, shipping industry has seen lots of technological changes. According to consolidated financial results announced for the year ending March 2004, Mitsui O.S.K. Lines, Ltd. and Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. ("K" Line) posted record net profits, and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line), the largest shipping company in Japan, made substantial gains of more than 200 percent as compared to the previous year.


The main reason for growth of the shipping industry is popularity of Japanese used vehicles. People prefer to buy second-hand vehicles from Japan as buying from Japan is an easy process. Plus, one could get a better quality vehicle at cheaper rates. Regular exportation of used vehicles to many countries helped in the development of the shipping industry.

According to Japanese Government there are around 1000 shipyards in Japan. Out of which, few are privately owned shipyard, while other multiple yards are operated by larger private or public companies. Japan manufactured boats are of high quality and play vital role in maritime transportation.

  • The Hakodate Dock Co., Ltd. :- The Hakodate Dock Co., Ltd. in 1896, the company was founded in Hakodate viewing scenic Tugaru Straight. For over a century, Hakodate dock have met various needs and demands for shipbuilding, ship repair, bridge construction and industrial machineries as the largest heavy industry company in the north of Japan.
  • IHI Marine United Inc. :- Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy Industries Co., Ltd., popularly known as IHI Marine United Inc. was founded in October 2002, through a merger of the shipbuilding and offshore division of IHI Corporation, and the naval shipbuilding division of Sumitomo Heavy Industries, Ltd.
  • Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. :- Imabari Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. was established in 1901 has grown to maintain a top share of the Japanese shipbuilding industry and ranks among the leading international ship builders. Produces bulk carriers, wood chips carrier, special cargo carriers, car carriers and ferries.
  • Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. :- Kawasaki Heavy Industries manufactures high-performance LNG and LPG carriers, container ships, bulk carriers and VLCCs, submarines, marine machinery and equipment, including main engines, propulsion systems, steering gears, deck and fishing machinery.. The Company is also involved in the development of offshore structures and research vessels too.
  • Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. :- Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding Co., Ltd.: Mitsui Engineering & Shipbuilding (MES). Although nearly one-half of the company's sales come from building ships, including oil carriers and hull tankers.
  • Namura Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. :-Namura Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. engages in the manufacture and sale of ships, steel structures, and machineries in Japan. The Shipping segment provides oil tankers, bulk carriers, product carriers, container ships, and other ships.
  • Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. :- The Company was founded on February 7, 1973 and began operations in June 1974. It is a joint venture between Sumitomo Corporation, Sumitomo Heavy Industries, and the Daizo Corporation. The list includes self-unloading bulkers, wood-chip carriers, car carriers, oil tankers, and submersible heavy-lift vessels.

There are even specialized training centers in Japan for shipbuilding. Japan has around one thousand shipyards, mainly privately owned, ranging from small private yards to large public or private establishments forming part of industrial groups.
